About your tutor

Hello — I'm Lea

I teach small groups of children at my home in Jurong West. Not a centre, not an agency, and not a rotating list of part-timers: every class on this website is taught by me.

I've spent the last eight years tutoring in Singapore — through the primary years, the PSLE, and into secondary Mathematics. Lea's Academy is where I teach now, from my own home in Jurong West.

The name on the door is mine, and that is rather the point. There is no rotating list of part-timers here, and no branch manager to go through. You deal with me, and I teach every lesson myself — the same person at the whiteboard in March and in October.

I hold a Bachelor's degree and a Master's in Management, both from the National University of Singapore. Neither of those is a teaching qualification, and I would rather say so plainly than let a logo do the work. What actually qualifies me is eight years of sitting beside children while they get things wrong, and knowing what to do next.

What I've learned in those eight years is that most children who are "bad at Maths" are not bad at Maths. They missed one step somewhere in P3 or P4, covered it up, and have been guessing ever since. The work isn't to push them harder through the current topic — it's to go back and find the step, which takes patience and a group small enough that I can actually notice.

That's why I cap every group at three. It's a smaller business than it could be — three families to a class rather than twelve — and I've made my peace with that. At three students I can see every worked solution as it's being written, hear the hesitation before an answer, and stop the lesson to fix something. At twelve, I'd be delivering a lecture and hoping.

How I teach

• Diagnose first. The trial lesson is as much for me as for you — I'm looking for where the gap actually is, which is usually two levels below the topic that's failing.
• Follow the school, not a parallel syllabus. What we do in a given week tracks what your child's school is teaching, so tuition reinforces rather than competes.
• Make them explain it back. A child who can talk you through their own working understands it. One who can only produce the answer has memorised a pattern that will break under exam pressure.
• Let them hear each other struggle. Peer learning isn't a buzzword here — it's the specific reason a group of three beats one-to-one for most children's confidence.
• Keep you informed. You'll hear from me over WhatsApp when something improves and when something isn't working. No termly report that arrives too late to act on.
