Science tuition where the marks are actually lost

Most children who do badly at Primary Science know the science. They lose the marks in the open-ended section, writing an answer that is true, sensible, and not what the question asked for. That gap is technique, and technique can be taught.

What we work on

The syllabus themes

We cover the P4 and P5 syllabus across its themes — Diversity (living and non-living things, materials), Cycles (life cycles of plants and animals, matter and the water cycle, reproduction), Systems (plant and human systems, cells, electrical systems), Interactions (forces, magnets, energy transfer, food chains and adaptations) and Energy (light, heat, energy forms and conversions).

Open-ended answering — the real work

This is where most of our time goes. Children learn to read the question for the command word, identify the concept being tested, and answer in the structure examiners are marking for: state the observation, name the concept, then link it explicitly back to the situation in the question. Three sentences, in that order, consistently.

We also drill the specific vocabulary that carries marks — evaporation versus boiling, melting versus dissolving, gains heat rather than "gets hot" — and the habit of naming the variable that changed rather than describing it vaguely.

Experiment and data questions

Identifying the independent, dependent and controlled variables; explaining why a control setup exists at all; reading trends off tables and graphs; and answering "what would happen if" questions by reasoning from the pattern rather than guessing. These questions are worth a lot and they follow recognisable shapes.

MCQ traps

The Science MCQ section is designed with distractors built from common misconceptions. We work through those misconceptions directly — the ones about shadows, about plants "eating" soil, about heat and temperature — so the trap answer stops looking attractive.

How the lessons run

  • Answers are read aloud and marked as a group. Three children see three different attempts at the same question and hear exactly why one scored two marks and another scored zero.
  • Concepts are explained before they're practised. No answer templates layered over a topic the child doesn't actually understand — that collapses the moment the question is phrased unfamiliarly.
  • Past-year and school paper questions from P5, sorted by topic first and then mixed under time — so P6 starts from a position of strength rather than catch-up.
  • Everyday examples. Condensation on a cold drink, why a metal spoon feels colder than a wooden one. Science that connects to something real is science that's remembered.

  • They score well on MCQ but badly on the open-ended section
  • Their answers are correct in substance but "didn't get the mark"
  • They can recite a definition but can't apply it to a new situation
  • They started strong in P3 and dropped in P5, when the syllabus deepens
  • They write one-line answers to three-mark questions

Common questions

Do you teach P3 Science?

Not as a regular class. P3 is largely about curiosity and observation, and children at that stage are usually better served by reading and asking questions than by tuition. I start at P4, when the syllabus and the marking both get more demanding.

Do you teach P6 Science?

No — at P6 I take Maths only. Science runs at P4 and P5, which is deliberately the point of it: the answering technique below is what wins PSLE marks, and it takes two years to become automatic. A child who arrives in P6 already writing structured answers needs far less help than one starting from scratch.

My child understands Science but can't write the answers. Is that common?

It's the single most common pattern I see, and it's the reason this class exists in the form it does. Understanding and answering are two separate skills at PSLE, and the second one is far more trainable than parents expect.

Do you do experiments in class?

Simple demonstrations where they genuinely help a concept land — but this isn't a lab. The exam tests whether your child can reason about an experiment on paper, so most of our time goes there.

Can my child take Science and Maths together?

Yes, and it's the most common pairing I see at P4 and P5. They're separate classes with separate fees, and I'll try to schedule them back to back so you make one trip.
